02 GIRLS SELECT 1 “THIS IS A VERY CLOSE TEAM, WITH A MAJORITY HAVING BEEN together for several years. We also have some new additions who have fit in seamlessly. They really enjoy practicing and playing together,” says head coach Tim Brown of the 02 Girls Select 1. Among the group are six ODP players and two regional players. Brown, who has been coaching soccer for more than 20 years, says the team has set realistic goals, including improving each

1/4 day, focusing on quality, and preparing for State Cup competition. “This was a large goal, since we would be competing in the 02 age group with a team majority made up of 03s,” he explains. “Our team motivation is quality and focusing on the little things. Too many teams focus on the results instead of the process required to achieve the positive results,” he says. The 02 Girls Select focus on one practice at a time, one game at a time. “The most important game we have is the one we are playing. The most important practice is the one we’re at.” Brown says the team’s playing style is very fluid, adaptive to the problems teams present them. “We are possession-focused and strong defensively.” Right now, the girls are in the second round of State Cup competition. They and their coach are looking forward to what’s ahead. “We won our Region, and now we’re playing some of the top teams from the rest of Florida. These are very strong teams that will really challenge us.”
