THE MURFREESBORO SOCCER CLUB (MSC) HAS BEEN PART OF THE BACKBONE of soccer in central Tennessee since its founding way back in 1977. During its four decades of providing a quality soccer experience for kids throughout the area, MSC has won a national championship and several state and regional championships, earning a solid standing throughout the state and beyond. However, the club’s leadership isn’t content to rest on the club’s reputation but is constantly working to be the forefront of the sport’s development throughout Tennessee. For instance, MSC Director of Coaching, Ali Arman, says the club has developed a new approach to its recreational program that is already paying dividends. “One thing that separates us from other clubs in our state,” Arman says, “is that we control both the rec and select programs.” While every rec team has a volunteer parent coach, Arman explains that all MSC’s rec players from U5 to U8 receive training from licensed, professional coaches. Each practice is organized by a group director who oversees practices which are organized and conducted by paid staff coaches, ensuring the players and volunteer coaches are on the same page and following the club’s player development plan. “We know the players at that young age are being taught the things according to our curriculum and being taught in the right way. It also serves as a way to educate these novice coaches on how to run a practice session,” Arman says. “That’s something that we’re proud of and we’re seeing gains now with our younger ages as far as their development and their skill level.” Arman says this structure and other cutting edge player and coaching development methods in their rec programs create a better environment for the kids and a more competitive program at the older competitive age groups. “I’m a firm believer that we have to start with the younger ages so that it will pay off down the road for the older ages,” Arman says. “I think it’s also important to educate the coaches that we have and build our coaching staff because the better of a coaching staff we have, that’s only going to allow us to be better able to develop our players.” MSC currently has close to 2,000 kids on its roster, 1,400 in the recreational program and between 450 to 500 playing on its select teams.
