Saylor Richard, a member of the Trussville Girls U14 State Cup champions, is a key player in the team’s success. Head coach Jeremy McLane says the seventh-grader possesses unlimited ability with a desire to continuously improve, making her a leader on this Division I squad. “She is fantastic. One of my favorite things about her is she’s super coachable,” says McLane. “She’s starting to finally realize that she can not only be successful because of her athleticism, but she can also become a smart soccer player.” McLane, who has only coached the team for one year, says one of his goals with Saylor is to develop her natural ability and help her transform her game to be more complete. McLane says when he first began coaching Saylor she used her speed and dribbling ability to beat defenders one-on-one. “I’m trying to get her to see the game better and to not only use her athleticism but understand how to move off the ball, how to use combination play, and how to get her mind on the game in a way to make her a better all-around player,” McLane says. “If she can do that, she will be extremely successful, and right now she is very good, but she can only get better and better. She does a great job of listening and trying to do to things I’ve asked of her.”
