COACH OTEY SMITHSON CALLS MICHAEL JONES THE PERFECT EXAMPLE of a NUSA player. “He has great leadership qualities, always works hard, and is a true champion of character,” says Smithson. In addition to being athletically gifted, Michael has added improved composure, positional awareness (both on and off the ball), and decision making dramatically since joining NUSA two years ago. Regarded as one of the most dangerous Division 1 attacking players in the state last season, Michael has received many awards and accolades for his achievements on the field. Most recently, Michael has received two more Max Preps National Player of the Week awards and is currently ranked No. 1 in the nation in statistics. “Equally important to his on the field success, Michael has been involved in our NUSA Leadership Program and with community outreach,” adds Coach Smithson. Michael and his seven siblings were adopted from Sierra Leone by Mike and Hayley Jones and are part of ‘The Jones Dozen Family’ in Franklin, Tenn. NUSA’s model — focusing on training, individual player development, and limited travel — allowed Michael to concentrate on his skills while also having time to adjust to life in the United States and for fun family activities. Michael will be playing for local NPSL team Inter Nashville FC this summer and is already committed to play at Trevecca Nazarene University. NUSA looks forward to coaching more of Michael’s siblings over the next few years.
