The Orlando City Soccer Club's 2005 Boy's Pre ECNL II team is a special group of young, talented soccer players. Coached by Nick Calo, the Senior Program Coordinator with Orlando City, the team has a unique character that focuses on defense protecting the net rather than just pushing everything forward to score bunches of goals. "One thing I'd point out about this team is they've got the most determined mindset to defend," says Calo. "Everyone's just kind of committed to defending. They don't like giving up goals. Shutouts are their goal every time we play." "One of the hardest things as a coach sometimes is getting talented players to use up their energy defending," Calo adds. "With this team, I don't have to do that." The focus on defense and team-first philosophy has resulted in quite a few accomplishments, including earning an invitation to play in the Southeast Regional Premier League (SRPL) after winning the championship of the Greater Central Florida (GCF) youth soccer league in their age group. In fact, both of Orlando City's Pre ECNL teams, I and II, were invited into the SPRL, playing against some of the Southeast's best soccer teams from Georgia, Tennessee, South Carolina, and North Carolina, a tremendous experience for these budding athletes. "The development of this age group was massive because we're not just playing the best kids in Florida," Calo says. "It puts them on a fast track for development because they're always playing against the top talent."
